Fishers of Men

Luke 5:1-8 tells the story of Jesus calling his first disciples. There are other accounts of this event, but Luke has the most detail. Anyway, Jesus is preaching to a crowd on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Apparently, the crowd was creeping closer, so Jesus jumped on an empty fishing boat and rowed out onto the water and preached from there.

When he was done speaking, he called for a man named Simon Peter to come out and cast his net down to catch some fish. Simon Peter told Jesus that he and his partners had been trying all night, but they hadn’t caught anything, but he would cast his nets once more, just because Jesus asked.

When he pulled up his net, he discovered an abundance of fish—so much that he had to have help to pull the net up. At once, Simon Peter realized that this man he talked to was the son of the living God. Jesus tells the fishermen to follow Him and He will make them fishers of men. And Simon Peter and his partners immediately followed Jesus, leaving everything behind.

So just like Simon Peter and his partners, a high school Christian should follow Jesus at all costs, including reputation, and become fishers of men.
