Life With Style

Having a Christ-like lifestyle in high school is difficult but achievable. There are many things in “today’s world” (I think that phrase is overused tremendously, but it fit here) that can distract a Christian of his or her path, especially a high school Christian. Many things can take attention away from Christian values and beliefs.

I heard something today that I thought was kind of interesting. In a sermon, a preacher asked, “What is the opposite of Christianity?”

Immediately, I thought about atheism. It seemed to fit. Since Christianity is believing in God, atheism would be believing in no God, right? But that was when the pastor came back with his answer: “The opposite of Christianity is idolatry.”

Idolatry, as defined by those little vocab sheets that have pictures with them, is blind or excessive devotion to something (in this case, not God). Atheism involves a simple belief, but idolatry is a lifestyle. So it makes much more sense to compare idolatry to Christianity because Christianity is not just a belief, but a lifestyle. Both idolatry and Christianity are ways of life.

Idols exist everywhere and come in all shapes and sizes. Money, success, girls (or boys), self-image, sports team (I have solved my problem), and learning are just a few forms of idolatry in this world. It is important to keep a healthy distance away from these things and focus on God.

So in order to become more God-devoted, there are a few steps you can take. First, pray. Then, do more Christ-oriented things like reading the Bible or attending church (with a purpose).

Hopefully this helps you or encourages you!
